Bergenfield was incorporated on June 25, 1894. In the early years of its existence as a community, it bore the name “Schraalenburg”. In 1872 Jersey City & Albany railroad built a train station in the borough & for lack of a better name called it “Bergen Fields”. This was later modified to “Bergenfield”.

DISTANCE FROM NYC: Approx 17.1 Miles/34 Minutes
The REC Commission sponsors a summer program at memorial park & Hickory Park, offering a variety of activities including field trips, the bowling alley, skating at the rink, zoo, shore, etc. There is no fee. Sign-ups are in June at the park when the program is in session. Also offered are tennis lessons, gymnastics, basketball for girls, fishing contest, weight training for high school students and joggers.
Sports programs include the Bergenfield JR Football League, Bergenfield Baseball Associations, Mens/Ladies Volleyball & open gym program. The Commission also sponsors a summer concert series at Coopers’ Pond Park, easter egg hunt & the halloween parade.
