Remembering where their journeys had begun, the Manhattan Duchmen who crossed the Hudson to establish a trading post on a lesser river, about 4 miles west, they called their site New Barbados. For 274 years, the name, as well as the architecture of some buildings & institutions, retained the Dutch stamp. In 1921, an act passed to rename New Barbados to Hackensack, an Indian term meaning “place of sharp ground”.

In addition to being the county seat for Bergen County, Hackensack has a large regional shopping center known as “Riverside Square” and many modern office buildings and luxury condominiums.
